The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
